The Golden Orfe (Leuciscus idus) is a popular, active, and hardy coldwater schooling fish, ideal for large, well-oxygenated ponds. Known for its bright orange-gold, slender, and often black-spotted body, it can grow up to 18-24 inches (46-60 cm) and enjoys swimming near the surface
- Appearance: Shimmering gold, orange, or reddish-gold body, sometimes with black spots near the head. A less common blue-silver variant exists.
- Behavior: Highly active, fast-swimming shoal fish. Known for jumping to catch insects, especially in summer.
- Pond Requirements: Best for large ponds (usually over 500+ gallons) due to their size and high oxygen requirements. They do not eat plants.
- Diet: Omnivores; they thrive on insects, mosquito larvae, and fish pellets.
- Sensitivity: Sensitive to poor water quality, low oxygen, and certain chemical medications, which can lead to "kinked" spines.
- Lifespan: Can live up to 20+ years
