A Ranchu goldfish is a Japanese fancy goldfish, known as the "King of Goldfish," distinguished by its stout, round body, lack of a dorsal fin, and often prominent head growth (wen), resembling a sumo wrestler with a curved back and broad tail. They come in various colors (calico, red, white, black) and require spacious tanks with excellent filtration due to their messy habits, often needing a top-down view for judging
Key Characteristics:
- Body: Stout, egg-shaped, with a strongly curved back (like a Japanese comb) and no dorsal fin.
- Head Growth (Wen): A fleshy, raspberry-like growth on the head, ranging from mild to extensive, covering the face.
- Tail: Broad, strong tail, with judges looking for a wide "bracelet" at its base.
- Color: Wide variety, including calico (speckled grey, orange, black), red, white, and chocolate.
- Size: Can grow quite large (up to 30cm), so they need large tanks.
- Temperament: Slow, clumsy swimmers, best kept with other fancy goldfish, not fast common goldfish
Care Considerations:
- Tank: Large, spacious tanks (at least 1.2m for adults) with strong filtration.
- Diet: High-quality sinking pellets, granules, and occasional fresh/frozen foods; offer blanched peas for digestion.
- Feeding: Due to potential poor vision from headgrowth, allow extra time to find food; avoid overfeeding.
- Water Quality: Essential; needs low nitrates, zero ammonia/nitrites, and stable temperatures
