The Broadtail Moor is a variety of fancy goldfish (Carassius auratus) known for its distinctive protruding "telescope" eyes and a long, flowing, unsplit caudal fin that is carried below the horizontal.

Physical Characteristics

  • Eyes: The most notable feature is the large, spherical, and prominent eyes that project outwards and slightly forward from the head.
Coloration: They are typically a deep, velvety black. Quality show fish have a uniform black color extending into their fins, giving them a rich, plush appearance. Other colors like red, white, or piebald combinations are available but less common in the traditional "moor" classification.
  • Tail (Caudal Fin): The "broadtail" designation refers to the tail fin's shape and length. The caudal fin is divided (split into two lobes), well-spread, and held gracefully, with the trailing edge having a square, rather than forked or pointed, appearance. The minimum length of the caudal fin should ideally be at least 75% of the body length.
  • Body Shape: They have a short, rounded, or egg-shaped body profile, with the body depth being approximately 65% of the body length.
  • Fins: They possess a single, high, and erect dorsal fin, with all other fins (pectoral, pelvic, anal) paired and elongated.
  • Size: Broadtail Moors can grow to be 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm) in length, including the tail.

Behaviour and Care

  • Broadtail Moors are peaceful and relatively slow swimmers due to their long fins and eye structure, making them poor competitors for food when housed with faster-moving goldfish varieties like Comets. They are best kept in a species-only tank or with other slow, similarly-impaired fancy goldfish varieties (e.g., Orandas, Fantails).
  • Their protruding eyes are sensitive to injury, so their aquarium environment should be free of sharp decorations or rough substrates. They are generally considered hardy fish suitable for beginners, provided they have a well-filtered tank with ample space and a quality diet.
