The blue orfe (Leuciscus idus) is a hardy, fast-swimming, and slender-bodied pond fish known for its striking silver-blue coloration and active surface-feeding behaviour. Growing up to 24–30 inches, these social, cold-water fish (4-22°C) require large, well-oxygenated, and filtered ponds. They are peaceful but need to be kept in schools.
Key Characteristics & Care Requirements
Appearance: A slender, silvery-blue body, sometimes with darker, bluish-black backs that lighten with age. They may have small, dark spots near the head.
Temperament: Very active, peaceful, and highly social—they must be kept in groups of at least 5–6 individuals.
Pond Setup: Suitable for large ponds with strong, active water flow, providing high oxygen levels.
Diet: Omnivores,, they often feed on insects, larvae, and small crustaceans at the water surface, making them useful for keeping mosquitoes in check.
Size & Growth: Can grow fast, often reaching 60cm+ (24"+) in length.
Sensitivity: Sensitive to some chemical pond treatments, particularly those containing copper, which can cause them to develop bent backbones
