A Black Ranchu is a fancy goldfish known for its deep black colour, round, stout body, and lack of a dorsal fin, often with a raspberry-like head growth (wen) like the Lionhead Ranchu, giving it a unique, sumo-wrestler-like look, requiring calm, clean water, soft décor, and a diet of quality flakes/pellets with greens, best kept with other slow-swimming fancy goldfish.

Key Characteristics

  • Body: Stout, egg-shaped, no dorsal fin, smooth curved back.
  • Head: Can have a prominent wen (head growth).
  • Color: Deep, solid black, though some may have red/black markings (Red & Black Ranchu).
  • Origin: Developed from common goldfish in Japan, known as the "King of Goldfish".

Care & Habitat

  • Tank: Minimum 60-100 liters (15-25 gallons) per fish, preferably a spacious, calm environment.
  • Water: Needs gentle filtration, regular water changes, and stable parameters (65-72°F / 18-22°C, pH 6.5-8.0).
  • Decor: Use sand substrate and soft decorations (silk plants, smooth gravel) to avoid fin damage.
  • Tankmates: Best with other slow-moving fancy goldfish (Orandas, Ryukins), avoiding fin-nippers.

Diet

  • Type: Omnivore, needs high-quality sinking pellets/flakes, supplemented with blanched greens (spinach, cucumber).
  • Feeding: Avoid overfeeding to prevent swim bladder issues.
